For whatever reason there seem to be issues with worn ribbon connector "cables" where they may work OK with hard drives but work marginally (or not at all) with SSDs. The other thing is that you might need a new "cable". FireWire is theoretically slower, but I understand in practice it's faster. And if you're using a USB enclosure, your model only has USB 2.0 (USB 3.0 was introduced on the mid-2012 models) with a raw data rate of 480 Mbit/sec. If you're doing it as a completely clean install, I would think doing it internally would be faster than dealing with the external interface. Can this be done after installing the SSD, or should I install HS on the SSD first? I'm looking to do a fresh, clean install of High Sierra, coinciding with the installation of the SSD.
